Highworth Town Council is pleased to announce that additional benches have been installed at the Barra Close Play Area, improving comfort and accessibility for park users.
The benches were installed by the Town Council’s Grounds Team, and the Council would like to extend its sincere thanks to Highworth District Lions and the WRDE UP CIC for generously sponsoring this improvement. Their support has helped enhance the facilities available to families, carers, and visitors using the play area.
These new benches will provide seating for parents and carers supervising children, as well as opportunities for rest and social interaction within the park.
Highworth Town Council is grateful for the continued support of local organisations whose contributions help improve community spaces for everyone.
The Progress of the Barra Close Play Area Redevelopment - 3rd december 2025
Highworth Town Council confirms that the redevelopment works at Barra Close Park have reached completion.
During the final sign-off inspection, a number of items were identified which require attention before the facility can be safely opened to the public.
The Council is working proactively with the appointed contractors to ensure these outstanding issues are rectified as a priority. Once the remedial works have been completed and the site meets all safety & quality standards, the park will be opened.
Highworth Town Council appreciates the community’s patience and understanding.
We look forward to welcoming residents to the improved Barra Close Park as soon as practically possible.
The Progress of the Barra Close Play Area Redevelopment - 17th September 2025
Many of you will have noticed that work on the redevelopment of Barra Park is now in full swing. The approved plans – shaped through extensive community consultation, including sessions with local primary schools – include a full-size Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), dedicated play zones for infants & juniors, and an exhilarating zip wire.
We’re grateful to residents – especially local families – for their patience and understanding throughout the construction period. The project is on track for completion in November 2025.
Highworth Town Council is pleased to announce that work on the much-anticipated redevelopment of the Barra Close Play Area will begin the week commencing Monday 4th August 2025.
In the initial phase, the Highworth Town Council team will be on site to remove the existing equipment and prepare the area for the arrival of contractors, who will then begin installing the brand-new play facilities.
The approved designs, developed following extensive community consultation, including engagement sessions with local primary schools, features a full-size Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), an infant and junior play park, and an exciting zip wire.
While the timing means the park will unfortunately be out of action during the summer holidays, the Council agreed that this long awaited and much needed investment should proceed without delay.

Highworth Town Council Secures £50,000 National Lottery Grant for Barra Close Play Area Redevelopment
Highworth Town Council is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded an incredible £50,000 grant from The National Lottery to help bring an exciting new vision for Barra Close Play Area to life!
After years of extensive consultation with our community, including feedback from local families, young people, and residents, the plans for the redevelopment of the Barra Close Play Area and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) have now been officially submitted to Swindon Borough Council’s Planning Department. We anticipate the planning process will take around eight weeks, with a decision expected by the end of May 2025.
Once planning permission is secured, the council will move swiftly to order the new play equipment and begin works to transform the park into a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible space for all. This project will create a much-needed community hub where children and families can enjoy outdoor activities, sports, and play for many years to come.
